WHITESTOWN — The New York Mills Fire Department responded to two separate fire incidents at the same Clark Mills Road residence on March 1, battling the second blaze for nearly eight hours in challenging weather conditions.
Firefighters first arrived at the single-family home at approximately 1:56 p.m. for a fire involving wiring in a second-floor bedroom ceiling.
The initial fire was quickly extinguished with pressurized water extinguishers within five minutes of the department’s arrival.
After turning the scene over to National Grid personnel and the homeowner, firefighters were called back to the same address at approximately 3:36 p.m. for a structure fire.
Units arrived within four minutes to find a working fire, prompting a request for mutual aid from neighboring departments.
The second, more serious fire required an extended response, with the last units clearing the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The homeowner and one pet were displaced by the fire, though no injuries were reported.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the cause of the second incident, with preliminary information indicating the fires were two separate occurrences.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including fire departments from Whitesboro, Westmoreland, Yorkville, New Hartford and Maynard, along with Oneida County Emergency Services, Central Oneida County Ambulance, and local police departments.
