ROCKINGHAM — A multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 91 during snowy conditions Saturday morning left one person dead and sent three others to the hospital, according to Vermont State Police.
The crash occurred around 9:46 a.m. near mile marker 33 northbound in Rockingham.
Troopers responded to what they described as a “10+ car crash” involving multiple collisions, with most resulting in minor damage.
The fatal collision occurred when a 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 rear-ended a stationary 2024 Peterbilt 200 series fuel tanker truck, causing substantial damage to the Hyundai’s front end.
The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
A woman and two juveniles who were passengers in the Hyundai were transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
One of the juveniles was airlifted to the hospital.
The truck driver, identified as Michael Warner, 40, of Nelson, New Hampshire, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the collision.
Investigators determined the Hyundai’s driver failed to stop in time due to icy road conditions.
The remaining vehicles involved in various crashes and slide-offs were either removed or driven away from the scene.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Westminster Fire Department, Rockingham Fire Department, Golden Cross Ambulance, Rescue Inc, Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement Division, Chester Police, AOT, SG Reed towing, and J&M Auto.
