MERIDEN — A 73-year-old man was seriously injured Wednesday when he was struck by two vehicles while crossing a street, with one driver fleeing the scene before being arrested later.
Maurice Carrier was legally crossing at the intersection of Park Street and Cedar Street around 12:10 p.m. when he was hit by a blue Ford Explorer with New Jersey license plates, according to police.
The driver left without stopping to help or call emergency services, leaving Carrier lying injured in the roadway.
While Carrier was on the ground, a red Toyota RAV4 driven by Clara Cruz Mendez, 41, ran over him, causing additional injuries.
Mendez parked nearby and remained at the scene, cooperating with investigators.
Carrier was treated at the scene by Hunter’s Ambulance Service before being airlifted to an area trauma center by LifeStar helicopter.
He is currently in stable condition.
Police later located the Ford Explorer near the Meriden Public Library and identified the driver as Diego Mosqura-Garcia, 31, who admitted his involvement.
Mosqura-Garcia was arrested and charged with evading responsibility in a motor vehicle collision causing serious injuries, operating a motor vehicle while license is suspended, and failure to exercise due care near a pedestrian.
He was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on March 20.
