AUBURN — A man was arrested on March 7 after a series of theft incidents dating back to January, according to the Auburn Police Department.
Steven Confer was taken into custody at 42 N Fulton Street when an officer spotted him through a window and announced his arrest.
Police said Confer attempted to flee and hid under a pile of clothing before officers established a perimeter and apprehended him without further incident.
The investigation began on Jan. 29 when a male entered an enclosed porch on N Lewis Street at approximately 10:35 a.m. and stole a pair of Air Jordan sneakers.
A witness recorded the theft and followed the suspect, confronting him and recovering the sneakers.
On Feb. 7, a cab driver reported picking up Confer from 42 N Fulton Street and driving him to Home Depot, where the suspect allegedly exited with a shopping cart full of tools.
According to police, Confer then asked to be driven to Pawn King in Auburn where he pawned the tools, providing identification and signing documents claiming the items were not stolen.
Home Depot’s Asset Protection confirmed over $1,000 in tools had been stolen on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.
Confer faces multiple charges including second-degree burglary, petit larceny, falsifying business records, and resisting arrest, along with a New York State Parole violation.
He was transported to the Cayuga County Jail where he was held pending arraignment.
