CAMPTON — One person is dead following an early morning house fire in Campton that required response from multiple fire departments across the region.
Just after midnight Saturday, March 8, Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue responded to a report of a fire at a single-family home on Ellsworth Hill Road.
Initial crews encountered widespread flames and attempted to search the home but were forced to withdraw due to deteriorating conditions and a partial structural collapse.
An adult male was later found deceased inside the home, along with two dogs.
The victim will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy scheduled for Sunday, March 9, to verify identity and determine cause and manner of death.
Firefighters battled the blaze amid intense wind gusts, below-freezing temperatures, and limited water supply, with a passing snow squall further complicating access to the scene.
The fire was brought under control at 2 a.m.
Assistance was provided by firefighters from Woodstock, Lincoln, Plymouth, Bristol, Waterville Valley, Rumney, Ashland, Holderness, Meredith, Hebron, New Hampton and Center Harbor.
Members of the Campton Police Department and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation also responded to assist.
The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office and Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue are investigating the origin and cause of the fire.
