Utica man arrested for car theft hours after jail release

WHITESTOWN — A Utica man was arrested March 6 after allegedly stealing a vehicle just hours after being released from jail, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol.

Deputies from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Division responded to 6075 Judd Road in the Town of Whitestown regarding a stolen motor vehicle.

Investigators identified Robert Pickering as the suspect in the theft, noting he had been released from the Oneida County Correctional Facility hours before the incident.

At approximately 11:53 p.m., Pickering was stopped by an officer with the Utica Police Department in the City of Utica.

Deputies responded to Utica to take custody of Pickering after being notified of his location.

The case was transferred to the Oneida County Criminal Investigative Unit, which charged Pickering with one count of Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree, a class D felony.

Pickering was processed at the Kurt B. Wymann Law Enforcement Building before being returned to the Oneida County Correctional Facility.

He is scheduled to appear in Whitestown Town Court at a later date.
