SPRINGFIELD — Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) and Hampden County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 41-year-old Juan Correa and seized a trafficking weight of cocaine, heroin and cash at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4.
FIU detectives had been investigating Correa as a suspect in a drug operation at a home on the 0-100 block of Armory Street.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the home and spotted Correa leaving the residence and getting into a car as they prepared to execute the warrant.
When detectives attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the 900 block of Worthington Street, Correa drove toward an unmarked police cruiser, colliding with it as a detective managed to avoid a head-on collision.
Correa then crashed into a city light pole, driving over the curb and sidewalks in an attempt to flee.
With a damaged tire, Correa led police on a slow-speed pursuit that ended when he stopped near the intersection of Bay Street and Dawes Street, where detectives placed him under arrest.
Detectives subsequently executed their search warrant at the Armory Street home, recovering more than 100 bags of crack-cocaine and two bags of powdered cocaine, with a total approximate weight of 39.6 grams.
The search also yielded more than 300 bags of heroin and more than $6,200 in cash.
Correa, a Springfield resident, faces multiple charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license (subsequent offense), leaving the scene of a property damage crash, failure to submit to police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, cocaine trafficking (36-100 grams), and possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug (subsequent offense).
