BOSTON — A routine traffic stop in East Boston led to the seizure of suspected fentanyl and the arrest of a 32-year-old man on drug trafficking charges Tuesday.
Officers assigned to District A-7 arrested Maykel Pena Ramirez of East Boston after discovering approximately 13.6 grams of what police believe to be fentanyl during a vehicle search.
The incident began at approximately 5:02 p.m. when an officer on patrol conducted a traffic stop near 450 McClellan Highway after discovering the vehicle’s operator had a suspended driver’s license.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer identified Ramirez as the driver and confirmed his license was suspended.
After requesting backup, officers removed both Ramirez and a passenger from the vehicle to continue their investigation.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed 12 plastic bags containing a tan powdery substance, suspected to be fentanyl.
Ramirez was arrested and is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court on charges of trafficking fentanyl over 10 grams and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
