WATERBORO — The York County Sheriff’s Office responded to Partners Bank in Waterboro last January following a report of two males attempting to cash forged checks from a business in New Hampshire.

When deputies arrived, the two suspects had already fled the scene.

One check had been successfully cashed for $1,800.

Following the investigation, authorities learned the suspects had visited several banks in the area, either cashing or attempting to cash fraudulent checks.

The probe revealed that they negotiated checks totaling $11,063.

Deputy Duane Fay identified the suspects as 57-year-old Orlando Rodriguez from Smithfield, Rhode Island, and 54-year-old Wilford Lee Rhodes from Mattapan, Massachusetts.

Arrest warrants were issued, and on Feb. 28, Rodriguez was apprehended in Providence, Rhode Island.

He is being held pending extradition to Maine.

Wilford Rhodes remains at large.

Authorities expect more charges to be filed by area agencies.
