Springfield police seize firearm, arrest man on probation

SPRINGFIELD — At approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit seized a loaded firearm and arrested 22-year-old Eric Brown on the 0-100 block of Mattoon Street.

Around 4 p.m., detectives received information that Brown was in possession of a firearm.

While conducting surveillance, detectives observed Brown leave a home on Northampton Avenue and get into the back of a car.

The vehicle stopped on Mattoon Street, and Brown got out of the car as detectives moved in to stop him.

Detectives located a loaded firearm in his jacket pocket, and he was placed under arrest.

Brown is currently on probation after being found guilty of armed assault with intent to murder in connection with a January 2022 shooting.

Eric Brown of Springfield is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and a firearm violation with one prior violent or drug crime.
