Loaded firearm seized in Springfield after traffic stop

SPRINGFIELD — On Thursday, Feb. 27 at approximately 6:35 p.m., members of the Springfield Police C3 Units seized a loaded firearm and arrested 19-year-old Jomar Matos after a traffic stop.

A few minutes earlier, officers had observed a vehicle near the intersection of St. James Avenue and Albany Street that had its headlight out.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and identified Matos as the driver.

Officers could see an opened backpack with numerous bags of marijuana inside behind the front passenger seat and asked Matos to step outside the car.

He complied, and officers located a firearm on the driver’s seat.

Inside the backpack, officers recovered 44 individually packed bags of marijuana, which was about 5 ounces in total.

The firearm was loaded and had a defaced serial number.

Nineteen-year-old Jomar Matos of Springfield is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and possession of a Class D drug.
