SMYRNA — A Smyrna man was arrested after allegedly approaching deputies with a knife following a disabled vehicle investigation, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
Steven Torres-Figueroa, 35, was charged with two counts of menacing a police officer, a class D felony, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.
Deputies responded to a disabled vehicle complaint in the Town of Smyrna and determined the vehicle needed to be towed due to traffic and snow removal concerns.
Authorities said Torres-Figueroa became irate over the decision to tow his vehicle.
After about an hour of attempted de-escalation while awaiting a tow truck, Torres-Figueroa allegedly entered his home, retrieved a kitchen knife, and approached deputies and state troopers aggressively while refusing to comply with commands.
Officials said deputies and troopers used de-escalation techniques while maintaining lethal and less-lethal response options.
Torres-Figueroa was eventually subdued using control tactics after he was no longer in possession of the knife and was arrested without further incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
Torres-Figueroa was arraigned in Chenango County CAP Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail.
His next court date has not been announced.
All charges are accusations, and Torres-Figueroa is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
