SOUTHBRIDGE — Officers were dispatched to Southbridge Academy at 25 Cole Ave. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, to investigate a report that a student had been stabbed by another student, according to police.
Upon arrival, officers worked with academy staff and administrators to secure the building and determine what had occurred.
A 19-year-old student had been making disruptive and threatening statements in class before getting into an argument with a seated student, police said.
A teacher positioned herself between the two students, but the 19-year-old continued making threats and picked up a pair of scissors.
The student then threw the scissors and ran out of the classroom.
The scissors struck a 17-year-old student in the thigh, causing a severe puncture wound that required medical treatment at a local hospital.
The injuries were non-life-threatening.
A detective dispatched alongside patrol officers apprehended the 19-year-old a short distance from the school.
Police identified the suspect as Scott A. Gomes, 19, of 114 Pine St., Apt. 1L, in Southbridge.
He was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and making threats that caused serious disruption to a school.
Gomes was taken to police headquarters for processing and will be held pending arraignment Thursday in Dudley District Court.
