DUXBURY — A Duxbury man was arrested Tuesday evening after refusing to stop for police and driving recklessly to evade officers, authorities said.
At approximately 5 p.m., Officer Dougherty observed a Toyota Celica on Parks Street with an expired inspection sticker, according to the Duxbury Police Department.
A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed that the registered owner had a suspended license due to an immediate threat.
When the driver turned onto Tremont Street, Officers Dougherty and Broderick attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver increased speed, refused to pull over, and crossed into oncoming traffic, at one point passing an SUV while entering the opposite lane, police said.
Due to safety concerns, officers terminated the pursuit.
Officer Broderick was able to identify the driver as 29-year-old Matthew Paulson of Duxbury, according to officials.
A broadcast alert was issued to surrounding towns.
Knowing Paulson’s residence, the officers checked the area and later saw the Toyota Celica on Parks Street, police said.
Officers Dougherty and Broderick conducted a traffic stop and took Paulson into custody without incident.
During questioning, Paulson told officers he had fled because his license was suspended, police said.
Paulson faces charges including failing to stop for police, operating with a suspended license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to stay in marked lanes.
