Fire engulfs warehouse in Groton, no injuries reported

GROTON — Town of Groton police and multiple fire departments responded late Monday night to a warehouse fire at Mystic Shipyard, where a detached building suffered major structural and smoke damage.

At approximately 11:32 p.m., the Groton Emergency Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting flames at 100 Essex St.

Police officers and firefighters arrived to find the roof engulfed in flames.

Emergency personnel established a perimeter, and firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Crews from nine fire departments assisted, including Mystic, Old Mystic, Submarine Base, Poquonnock Bridge, Ledyard, Noank, City of Groton, North Stonington and Quiambaug.

Groton Ambulance, Mystic River Ambulance, Lawrence & Memorial Paramedics and a canteen truck from the Providence Fire Department also responded.

No injuries were reported, but fire and building officials deemed the warehouse and office building uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Town of Groton police fire investigators and the Mystic Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office.
