Homer crash shuts down interstate for hours

HOMER — New York State Police responded to an overturned tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 near mile marker 56 in the town of Homer at approximately 7:25 a.m. on Feb. 21.

The driver, a 38-year-old woman from Carlstadt, New Jersey, was evaluated at the scene but was not transported.

The interstate was shut down around 9 a.m. for tow removal and reopened at approximately 11 a.m.

Troopers had responded to multiple crashes and disabled vehicles earlier in the morning.

At approximately 3:13 a.m., troopers assisted a Toyota Highlander that went off the roadway into a snow embankment near mile marker 53 in Cortland.

The 29-year-old male driver from Jamaica, New York, was not injured.

At 5:25 a.m., troopers were dispatched to I-81 north near mile marker 58 in Homer, where a tractor-trailer overturned.

The 58-year-old male driver from Brookhaven, Georgia, was not injured.

At 7:10 a.m., troopers responded to a crash near mile marker 48 in Cortlandville, where a Jeep Wrangler lost control, rolled over, but landed upright.

The 29-year-old male driver from Endicott, New York, was not injured.

At 8:24 a.m., troopers responded to I-81 north near mile marker 56 in Homer for a two-vehicle crash involving a Toyota RAV4 and a Chevrolet Equinox.

The 22-year-old male driver of the RAV4 from Prattsburgh, New York, and the 39-year-old male driver of the Equinox from Cortland, New York, were not injured.

At 11:27 a.m., troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash with reported injuries on State Route 281 in Preble.

The investigation determined that a Toyota Corolla attempted to make a left turn but instead crossed onto an on-ramp, where it was struck by a Dodge Ram traveling northeast on State Route 281.

The 22-year-old female driver of the Corolla and three passengers—a 25-year-old male, a 19-year-old male, and a 29-year-old female, all from Syracuse, New York—sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Upstate Medical Center.

The 70-year-old male driver of the Dodge Ram from Liverpool, New York, was not transported.
