SHARON — The Sharon Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 798 Vermont Route 14 on Thursday at 8 a.m. after a passerby reported smoke and fire coming from the basement.
Firefighters were assisted by area fire departments and the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department in suppressing the flames.
During the response, officials were informed that a resident of the home was unaccounted for and believed to have not escaped.
The Sharon Volunteer Fire Department contacted the Vermont Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, which responded to investigate the origin and cause of the fire.
During fire overhaul operations, firefighters discovered a body inside the home.
The body was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for identification and an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Officials said the fire remains under investigation but is not currently considered suspicious.
