READFIELD — Maine State Police arrested a Belfast man Wednesday in connection with the homicide of his wife at a home on Giles Road.
Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 10:02 a.m. and arrived to find 32-year-old Margaux Whittemore deceased outside the residence.
Inside the home, troopers found 67-year-old Dorothy Whittemore with injuries. She was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she was initially listed in critical condition. Her condition has since been upgraded.
The suspect, 34-year-old Samuel Whittemore of Belfast, fled the scene but was taken into custody by a trooper a short distance away.
He was taken to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for an evaluation before being transported to the Kennebec County Jail, where he has been charged with murder.
Authorities said Margaux and Samuel Whittemore were married and lived in Belfast. They were visiting Samuel’s parents at the home at the time of the incident.
Dorothy Whittemore is Samuel’s mother. His father was not present during the incident but arrived shortly afterward.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta conducted an autopsy on Thursday morning.
The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
