BOSTON — At about 5:23 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, officers assigned to District E-18 (Hyde Park) arrested Antoine Mendez, 37, of West Roxbury, for multiple shoplifting offenses.
Officers were conducting a walk and talk in the area of 1035 Truman Parkway due to recent serial shoplifting incidents.
A BRIC flyer had been disseminated depicting an individual believed to be involved in four prior incidents.
Officers were aware that the suspect had previously used a bicycle and a wheeled shopping bag.
While patrolling the area, officers observed two unattended bicycles at the entrance of a shopping plaza.
They maintained surveillance on the bicycles and saw an individual matching the prior descriptions fleeing the area on a bicycle while pulling a suitcase-like bag with wheels.
Officers positioned their cruiser in front of the suspect and attempted to stop him.
The suspect immediately dropped the wheeled bag and attempted to flee.
He slipped off the bicycle and continued to run.
A foot pursuit ensued, and officers were able to stop him.
As officers attempted to take him into custody, the suspect actively resisted.
Despite his refusal to comply, officers placed him in handcuffs.
They recovered approximately $271.81 in stolen merchandise from the store.
Mendez was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest.
Officers also determined he had two warrants for his arrest for larceny from a building and failure to register as a sex offender.
He is expected to be arraigned in West Roxbury District Court.
