NEW HARTFORD — A parole absconder was apprehended by police after allegedly stealing merchandise from a sidewalk sale on Feb. 15 at 12:30 p.m.
The incident occurred outside Forever Leather in the New Hartford Shopping Center.
A retired Pennsylvania police officer witnessed the theft and confronted the suspect, later identified as Charles Green, 42.
Green fled on foot after the confrontation, but the stolen merchandise was recovered.
New Hartford police officers located Green walking nearby and attempted to detain him.
Green fled again but was apprehended after a brief foot chase along Genesee Street.
Upon his arrest, police discovered Green had two outstanding warrants.
One warrant was for a larceny charge issued by the New Hartford Police Department.
The other was a parole warrant from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, as Green was a parole absconder.
Green is on parole for a prior felony charge of burglary in the third degree.
He was charged with two counts of petit larceny, a Class A misdemeanor, and the parole warrant.
Green was processed at the New Hartford Police Department and transported to the Oneida County Jail.
He was turned over to Oneida County Corrections Deputies and remains in custody awaiting arraignment in the Oneida County Centralized Arraignment Part Court.
