OGUNQUIT — Maine State Police are investigating a double fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 95 early Thursday morning.
The incident happened at approximately 6:05 a.m. at mile marker 14 southbound in Ogunquit.
According to the initial investigation, a tractor-trailer owned by EW Logistics of Hauppauge, N.Y., and operated by 35-year-old Xiaoying Ma of New York City, N.Y., was traveling northbound when it lost control.
The tractor-trailer crashed through the median guardrail and struck two vehicles traveling southbound.
The first vehicle, a Cadillac sedan operated by 64-year-old Linda Huelsman of Kennebunk, was hit, and Huelsman died at the scene from her injuries.
The second vehicle struck was a Mack box truck owned by EAN Holdings of Tulsa, Okla., and operated by 55-year-old Brian Ellis of Kittery.
Ellis was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital but later died from his injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to York Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of the turnpike at Exit 14 in Wells.
Two lanes have since reopened.
Weather conditions are believed to have been a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing and will be submitted to the York County District Attorney’s Office for review of any potential criminal charges.
Assisting the Maine State Police were the Ogunquit and Wells fire departments, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Maine Turnpike Maintenance, and National Wrecker.
