Burnham woman indicted in fatal Stetson crash

BURNHAM — A Burnham woman has been indicted in connection with a fatal crash that occurred in Stetson on July 5, 2024.

Jessica McCarthy, 40, was indicted by a grand jury on Jan. 29 on charges of manslaughter and operating under the influence of drugs or a combination of substances resulting in death.

The crash, which took place at approximately 12:10 a.m. on Mullen Road, involved a single truck that left the road and struck a tree, trapping two occupants inside.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Dean Long, 29, of Newport, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, including deputies, the Criminal Investigation Division, and the Crash Reconstruction Team, responded to the incident.

The investigation, which involved the execution of several search warrants and interviews, was lengthy and culminated in the case being presented to the grand jury.

McCarthy has since turned herself in to the Penobscot County Jail and has been released on bail.
