South portland police arrest suspect in Maine mall shooting

SOUTH PORTLAND — The South Portland Police Department received information today that Ahmed Basheer Awad, the suspect in the Feb. 5 Maine Mall shooting, wanted to turn himself in to police so there could be a safe and peaceful resolution for all involved.

South Portland Detectives worked with Awad, through a third party, to accomplish this.

At 3:30 p.m. today, South Portland Detectives met Awad outside of the Cumberland County Jail, where they took him into custody without incident.

Police accompanied him into Cumberland County Jail, where he was charged with Elevated Aggravated Assault class A felony, Reckless Conduct With a Dangerous Weapon class C felony, and Carrying a Concealed/Threatening Display of a Weapon (person under 21 years of age) class D misdemeanor.

The firearm has not been recovered.

Awad is currently being held on $100,000 cash bail pending arraignment.

He will be arraigned tomorrow, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.
