Rhode Island resident seriously injured after being struck by vehicle

NEWPORT — A 58-year-old Newport resident was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle on Connell Highway at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 5.

According to preliminary reports, a 50-year-old woman from Middletown experienced a medical emergency while driving, causing her vehicle to veer off the road and hit the pedestrian who was walking along the adjacent bike path.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, and the male pedestrian was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for further treatment.

The female driver was also taken to Newport Hospital for medical evaluation and is in stable condition.

At this time, no charges are being filed against the driver as the circumstances of the accident are currently being investigated.

Normal traffic flow has resumed in the area following the incident.

The Newport Police Department urges all motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and cautious while traveling.

The investigation is ongoing.
