SOUTH YARMOUTH — A man dressed in all black with his hood up and a mask over his face led police on a foot chase Monday after allegedly shoplifting a bottle of alcohol from a liquor store, according to police.
A Yarmouth Police detective said he saw two suspicious men outside the store and believed they were preparing to rob it.
As the detective circled the parking lot, one man ran out of the store carrying a large bottle of alcohol.
The detective exited his cruiser and ordered the suspect to stop, but the man fled, running through multiple parking lots, crossing a busy street, and attempting to climb a large stockade fence in a nearby residential neighborhood.
He discarded the bottle of alcohol during the chase.
The suspect was unable to scale the fence and surrendered to the detective.
Another officer and a Massachusetts State Trooper arrived to assist with the arrest.
The man refused to speak with police or provide his name, both at the scene and during booking.
He was eventually identified as William Viera, 18, of South Yarmouth.
Viera has been charged with shoplifting by asportation, resisting arrest, vandalizing property, and possession of liquor under the age of 21.
He was arraigned Tuesday morning in Barnstable District Court.
