SOMERSET — A month-long investigation by the Somerset Police Department culminated in the arrest of a Fall River man on drug trafficking charges after he was implicated in a home burglary.
Detective Don Cormier initiated the investigation in January following a report of two masked individuals forcibly entering a Somerset resident’s home.
The suspects demanded money after kicking in the front door.
Evidence led to the identification of Davonta Davis, known as “Freak,” as a participant in the crime.
An arrest warrant was issued for Davis, and a collaborative effort to apprehend him was launched with the Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team (CINRET) South.
On Jan. 30, law enforcement officers from multiple units, including the Somerset Police Detective Division, Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), CINRET South, Somerset Police Department’s Patrol Division, and Swansea Police Detective Division, executed the arrest.
During the operation in Somerset, Davis attempted to flee on foot but was ultimately captured.
During his attempted escape, Davis discarded a bag containing approximately 100 grams of suspected Fentanyl, valued at around $10,000 and well above the state’s minimum threshold for trafficking charges.
Davis faces charges for Trafficking Fentanyl in addition to the arrest warrant charges, which include Unarmed Burglary and three counts of Vandalizing Property.
Police Chief William Tedford praised the SPD Detective Division for their dedication and perseverance in the investigation, which led to the arrest of a career criminal and the seizure of significant narcotics.
The success of the operation was supported by multiple agencies, including the Massachusetts State Police CINRET South, VFAS unit, United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), United States Secret Service, Fall River Police CAST Unit, and the Swansea Police Department.
Their assistance was instrumental in the capture and arrest of Davis.
