SPRINGFIELD — A routine traffic stop escalated into the arrest of a Springfield man on numerous charges including fentanyl trafficking and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, the Springfield Police Department reported.
Brandon Kenney, 27, was apprehended on Jan. 20 after a vehicle he was in attempted to avoid police by turning into a closed business’s driveway on Pine Street around 2:19 p.m., police said.
The female driver, known to police as a narcotics user, left the vehicle, prompting officers to approach and speak with Kenney, the passenger.
Kenney initially gave a false name and birth date to police.
However, officers soon confirmed his identity, revealing an active instate arrest warrant.
During the arrest, Kenney resisted, resulting in a use of force by the officers.
A subsequent search uncovered a Smith & Wesson handgun with a defaced serial number and approximately 1.21 grams of fentanyl, along with other items related to drug trafficking, according to the police.
Kenney, who was on probation and prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his criminal history, was processed at the Springfield Police Department.
Following the arrest, Kenney was cited to appear in Windsor County Superior Court, Criminal division, in Windsor at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 21.
He was transported to Southern State Correctional Facility and held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
The Springfield Police Department clarified that decisions regarding bail and incarceration are within the purview of the Judicial System, which includes Judges, Court Clerks, and the State Attorney’s Office.
