Springfield man arrested, loaded firearm seized after ShotSpotter alert

SPRINGFIELD — A ShotSpotter activation led Springfield police to arrest a man and seize a loaded firearm late Sunday night.

At around 9:15 p.m., officers responded to the ShotSpotter alert near School Street and High Street.

Utilizing city cameras, Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center analysts helped officers identify a suspect vehicle, which was traced to an address on Sylvester Street.

Members of the C3 Units and Squad “C” conducted surveillance at the Sylvester Street location.

When the suspect vehicle arrived at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers approached and detained the driver, 39-year-old Jonathan Brunson, and his 12-year-old passenger.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers found two shell casings and a loaded firearm.

Brunson was arrested, and the juvenile was released to her mother.

Brunson faces multiple charges, including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, firearm violation with two prior violent or drug crimes, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and possession of a defaced firearm during the commission of a felony.

Additional charges include assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license as a habitual traffic offender.
