PLYMOUTH — A wanted fugitive was arrested Thursday afternoon after attempting to commit bank fraud at a local Terryville bank, according to the Plymouth Police Department.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., officers responded to a call from Webster Bank staff at 1 North Riverside Avenue, who reported a male using a fake ID to make unauthorized withdrawals.
Police, already in the vicinity, arrived swiftly as the suspect attempted to exit the bank.
Continuous updates from the bank staff to Litchfield County Dispatch enabled officers to detain the individual quickly.
Upon arrest, the suspect, who initially provided multiple false names, was found in possession of several fraudulent IDs, narcotics, and related paraphernalia.
Fingerprint analysis ultimately identified the man as Kiel Smith Macleod, a 42-year-old resident of Maine, with an active, extraditable warrant from Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.
Further investigation connected Macleod to similar fraudulent activities at other Webster Bank branches across Connecticut.
He has been charged with identity theft, providing false statements, and possession of narcotics.
Macleod was held on a $150,000 bond and was due to appear in New Britain Superior Court on Jan. 24.
The Plymouth Police Department commended the Webster Bank staff, Litchfield County Dispatch, and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department for their collaborative efforts in the arrest and ongoing investigation.
