SPRINGFIELD — At approximately 7:00 p.m., detectives from the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit came under fire while conducting surveillance on the 0-100 block of Fernald Street, officials said.

The unmarked cruiser was hit by gunfire, but no officers were injured in the shooting.

The suspects, driving a vehicle, fled the scene and eventually crashed on Grayson Drive near Fox Road.

They then escaped on foot into the nearby woods.

Multiple individuals have since been detained or arrested in connection with the incident.

Police are continuing their search for any remaining suspects.

Residents of the North Branch Parkway area are advised to lock their doors and immediately report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1.

Authorities have urged the community to exercise caution, treating the suspects as armed and dangerous.

Further updates are expected to be released on Friday once the individuals in custody have been processed.

In the meantime, a significant police presence will remain in the area to ensure public safety and facilitate the ongoing manhunt.
