CAPE ELIZABETH — Cape Elizabeth police are alerting residents to a scam involving individuals posing as Central Maine Power (CMP) employees going door-to-door.
CMP reports an uptick in calls about people falsely claiming to represent the utility company.
A CMP spokesperson said legitimate employees always carry company identification badges, drive marked CMP vehicles, and do not request account information during home visits.
The utility company emphasized it never sends employees into homes to use computers or other devices, photograph electric bills, offer discounts or cost-saving programs, or encourage service sign-ups.
CMP also does not ask customers to make payments using pre-paid debit cards or other non-refundable methods.
Police advise residents to be wary of common scammer tactics, including:
– Using fraudulent phone numbers that appear to be from CMP on caller ID
– Sending deceptive emails and text messages
– Impersonating CMP employees in door-to-door visits
Scams may involve threats of imminent service disconnection, requests for cash payments for new meters, or claims of payment processing errors requiring customers to provide bank information.
Residents encountering suspicious activity are urged to contact local law enforcement and CMP directly to verify any requests or claims.
