GRAY — Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office successfully resolved a tense standoff on Jan. 22 after a wanted man barricaded himself inside a Gray residence.

The incident began at 9:10 a.m. when authorities were dispatched to 127 Shaker Road Lot 5 to locate 29-year-old Landen Rankin, who was wanted by the Gorham Police Department on charges of felony Domestic Violence Terrorizing.

Rankin had made threats to visit a local daycare in Gorham, implying he might bring a firearm.

Upon arrival, deputies found Rankin’s vehicle running in the driveway.

Rankin retreated into his home, refusing to exit and engage with law enforcement, prompting a standoff.

To ensure the situation was handled safely, the Cumberland County Emergency Services Unit, the Cumberland County Crisis Negotiations Unit, and the Cumberland County Drone Team were called to assist.

With the home located within 1000 feet of SAD 15 Schools, the schools were placed on lockdown, and a deputy was assigned to secure the premises.

Residents in the vicinity were alerted to shelter in place through a Code Red notice from the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center.

After ongoing negotiations, Rankin peacefully surrendered to authorities at 11:14 a.m. and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was then handed over to the Gorham Police Department and transported to the Cumberland County Jail.
