SPRINGFIELD — Two suspects are in custody and a stolen firearm has been recovered following a shooting incident on Cambridge Street, according to the Springfield Police Department.
On Jan. 19 at around 3:30 p.m., Springfield police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert on the 0-100 block of Cambridge Street.
They found an adult male with a gunshot wound on the 100 block of Cambridge Street.
The victim, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment.
Crime analysts from the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center (R-TAC) used city surveillance cameras to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
They observed Madwin Lluveras, the victim, discard a firearm into a trash can.
An unidentified individual retrieved the weapon from the trash and handed it to an occupant of a vehicle, which then left the area.
Springfield officers, assisted by Massachusetts State Police troopers, later stopped the suspect vehicle on the 900 block of State Street.
A loaded firearm, reported stolen from North Carolina and equipped to hold 30 rounds, was found inside the car with 20 rounds of ammunition.
The driver of the vehicle, Kelvin Martinez, was arrested.
The passenger is set to receive a criminal complaint.
Further investigation and review of city camera footage showed Lluveras firing multiple shots before disposing of the gun.
Lluveras, 36, was arrested at Baystate Medical Center.
Lluveras faces charges including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm in public, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, and receiving stolen property.
Martinez, 24, is charged with tampering with evidence, possession of a large capacity firearm and ammunition without an FID card, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, and receiving stolen property.
Both suspects are from Springfield.
