GROTON — A man known for previous confrontations with law enforcement was arrested Monday after making threats of violence online against police officers and students, leading to a day-long search and his eventual capture in Mystic.
Aaron Stanislav, 33, was taken into custody at the Mystic VFW after Groton and Stonington police tracked his whereabouts following his threatening social media posts earlier in the day.
The arrest came after extensive efforts by local authorities to locate and apprehend Stanislav without incident.
The Groton Police Department was alerted to the threats around 12:20 p.m. by the Connecticut State Police Intelligence Operations Unit.
Stanislav, who is familiar to the police for past erratic and threatening behavior, did not specify any particular schools in his threats, which were deemed non-specific.
Officers were dispatched to the Mystic Education Center, a site Stanislav had previously used for shelter despite being formally trespassed from the property.
A drone from the department’s Drone Unit was employed to ascertain his presence, which could not be confirmed.
Later in the afternoon, new online posts indicated Stanislav was on the Stonington side of Mystic.
This information led to his arrest at the Mystic VFW by both Groton and Stonington officers.
Following his capture, Stanislav was transported to L&M Hospital for evaluation.
An arrest warrant affidavit was issued, charging Stanislav with Threatening in the 1st Degree.
After being released from the hospital around 8:30 p.m., he was formally arrested by Groton Police.
During the booking process, Stanislav attempted to escape custody but was swiftly detained by detectives.
Stanislav is being held on a $1,000,000 bond set by the court and an additional $100,000 bond set by Groton Police for the attempted escape.
He is scheduled for arraignment at G.A. 10 in New London today.
Despite a thorough search by officers, K9 units, and drones, no weapons were found.
