SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield man was arrested Thursday morning on a slew of charges including domestic assault and drug trafficking following a swift police response to a reported incident.

The Springfield Police Department disclosed that at about 7:13 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence after receiving a domestic assault report.

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Pedro Rodriguez of Claremont, New Hampshire, had reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived.

According to the police, the victim alleged that Rodriguez had assaulted her over a monetary dispute and had tried to prevent her from calling 911 by attempting to take her cellphone.

During the response, Officer Franchi encountered Rodriguez’s silver Ford Expedition and observed him returning to the scene.

A search of Rodriguez led to the discovery of suspected cocaine and a large sum of money.

Despite Rodriguez’s refusal to consent to the search of his vehicle, it was seized pending a search warrant.

The subsequent search executed with the assistance of Manchester Police Department’s K9 Moose and Officer Doucette revealed over 250 grams of cocaine and more than 1,500 bags of suspected heroin.

Rodriguez was initially charged with domestic assault, interference with emergency services, and possession of cocaine.

Following the vehicle search, charges of heroin trafficking and cocaine trafficking were added.

Rodriguez was processed at the Springfield Police Department and issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division, Windsor Unit on Dec. 16 at 12:30 p.m. He is currently lodged at Southern State Correctional Facility with bail set at $10,000.

The Springfield Police Department acknowledges the collaboration of the Weathersfield Police Department and the Manchester Police Department in the investigation.
