WEBSTER — A local man was arrested for assaulting police officers who were responding to a domestic violence incident on Christmas night.
Webster Police Department officers were called to Whitcomb Street at about 11:52 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a man assaulting a woman in the street.
Officers Joseph Stephens, Alex Johnson, Shane Murray, and Bryan Blomgren located the suspect and proceeded with the arrest.
Ernest Chaput, 62, a resident of Whitcomb Street, attempted to interfere with the officers as they were arresting the suspect.
Despite multiple warnings to stay back, Chaput began swearing at the officers and advanced towards them aggressively.
Chaput pushed one officer and swatted at another’s arm.
When officers tried to arrest him, he resisted and had to be taken to the ground.
After a brief struggle, Chaput was subdued and taken into custody, continuing to yell and swear at the officers throughout the incident.
Chaput faces charges of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, and interfering with a police officer.
He was released on $500 cash bail and arraigned at Dudley District Court the following day.
