LANESBOROUGH — Officers from the Lanesborough Police Department arrested a 64-year-old Pittsfield man on charges of carjacking and assault after responding to an incident in the Target parking lot on Thursday, Jan. 16, at around 1:30 p.m.
The victim, who was assaulted with punches and kicks, managed to prevent the suspect, identified as Earl N. Kirchner, from stealing his vehicle and called the authorities.
Police arrived in time to apprehend Kirchner before he could flee the scene.
During the arrest, Kirchner resisted and kicked the officers, but no injuries were reported following the confrontation.
Kirchner now faces charges of carjacking, a felony, as well as two misdemeanor charges of assault & battery and assault & battery on a police officer.
Following the incident, Kirchner was taken to the Berkshire County House of Corrections to await arraignment.
The Lanesborough Police Department is conducting further investigations into the matter.
