GORHAM — A suspect accused of stealing over $60,000 in electronics from retail stores nationwide led Gorham police on a high-speed chase that crossed state lines on Jan. 16.

Authorities identified the suspect as Zaire Ruffin, who is believed to be part of a larger crime syndicate involved in a series of thefts across nine states, including Florida, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

The pursuit began around 5:45 p.m. after Gorham Police responded to a Walmart where Ruffin was reportedly spotted.

He was initially detained but managed to escape on foot and entered a white 4-door Hyundai with Michigan license plate ESR 3096, where an accomplice waited.

After being located by another officer on Berlin Gorham Road, the suspects fled in the vehicle, turning off their lights and speeding into Randolph, New Hampshire.

The chase was called off by local police due to safety concerns.

The New Hampshire State Police (NHSP) later spotted the vehicle in Jefferson and initiated a second pursuit, which was also terminated for safety reasons.

The car was last seen heading into Vermont, and the Vermont State Police have been alerted.

Ruffin is known to have stolen from 26 other retail stores.

The Gorham Police Department is seeking information to identify the driver and assist in the investigation.

Witnesses and those with relevant information are encouraged to contact the department at (603) 466-2334.
