DAMARISCOTTA — Central Maine Power (CMP) is alerting residents and businesses about imposters claiming to represent the utility company, including some going door-to-door.
CMP emphasized that its employees will never enter a customer’s home to use a computer or take photos of electric bills.
The company also does not send representatives to offer discounts, cost-saving programs or encourage sign-ups for services at residences.
Customers are advised to be wary of requests for payments via pre-paid debit cards or other non-refundable methods, which CMP says it does not use.
Known scammer tactics include using fraudulent phone numbers that appear to be from CMP on caller ID, sending deceptive emails and texts, and individuals posing as utility workers at customers’ doors.
Common scams involve threats of imminent service disconnection, requests for cash payments for supposed meter upgrades, and claims of payment processing errors requiring customers to provide bank information.
CMP urges customers who encounter suspicious activity to contact the company directly using official channels to verify any requests or claims.
