1 min read

CRANSTON — Cranston police are alerting residents to a new phone scam in which callers impersonate specific police officers to obtain personal information.

The Cranston Police Department reported Tuesday that an unidentified individual has been calling members of the public, claiming to be a Cranston police officer and requesting a return call to discuss personal matters.

Authorities say the scammer has gone as far as creating a voicemail message that identifies them as a specific Cranston officer.

Police are urging residents not to disclose any personal information over the phone to anyone claiming to be a police officer.

Anyone who receives such a call is advised to report the incident by calling the Cranston Police main number at 401-942-2211.

The department emphasized that residents can always visit the police station in person to discuss matters with an officer.

Law enforcement officials remind the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of callers before sharing any sensitive information.
