YARMOUTH — A routine traffic stop for cell phone use while driving escalated into a high-speed pursuit Monday afternoon, resulting in the arrest of a 48-year-old Barnstable woman.

A Yarmouth police officer attempted to pull over a driver he observed holding a phone in front of her face while talking.

The vehicle initially pulled into the breakdown lane but then accelerated back into traffic, initiating a pursuit.

The chase reached speeds of 65 mph on narrow residential roads, with the fleeing vehicle crossing center lines.

Citing public safety concerns, the officer terminated the pursuit.

Shortly after, other drivers alerted the officer to the vehicle’s location.

He found it parked in a West Yarmouth Road driveway with the driver still inside.

After initially attempting to back up, the driver surrendered and was arrested.

A search of the vehicle uncovered drug paraphernalia, a crack pipe, unauthorized prescription medication and a small quantity of crack cocaine.

Melissa Bordun was charged with multiple offenses, including using an electronic device while driving, operating with a suspended license, failing to stop for police, reckless operation, marked lanes violation, speeding, and drug possession charges.

Bordun was arraigned Monday in Barnstable District Court.
