CUMBERLAND — A report of a suspicious individual possibly armed with a long gun at the Cumberland Congregational Church parking lot led to a brief lockdown of the MSAD #51 campus on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The Cumberland County Regional Communications Center received a 911 call at 9:04 a.m. from a passerby who spotted someone with a long, black item that was believed to be a weapon.

Police swiftly responded to the scene and informed the nearby school district, which implemented a lockdown as a precaution.

Upon investigation, authorities found that the object in question was a tire iron being used by an individual to change a tire.

There were no weapons involved in the incident, and the school district was notified of the findings, allowing normal operations to resume after approximately 20 minutes.

Chief Charles Rumsey expressed gratitude towards the community member who reported their concerns and emphasized the importance of vigilance. “We are appreciative of the individual who called 9-1-1 to report their concern and encourage all members of the community to never hesitate to contact emergency services immediately when observing suspicious activity,” Rumsey stated.

The Cumberland Police Department reminds citizens to stay alert and report any unusual activities to help maintain community safety.
