Somerville police arrest suspect in string of burglaries

SOMERVILLE — The Somerville Police Department captured Fabio Armelio, 47, Friday evening in connection to a series of breaking and entering cases in the Powderhouse neighborhood.

At 6:35 p.m., a Cherry Street resident dialed 911 after discovering an intruder in their basement.

Responding officers from the Somerville Police Patrol Division, assisted by a multi-agency Surveillance Team, apprehended Armelio without incident.

Armelio is considered a person of interest in a dozen burglaries targeting residents and members of the Tufts University Community since Dec. 20.

He has been directly linked to three incidents, with the remaining cases still under investigation.

Additionally, Armelio faces twenty outstanding arrest warrants across multiple jurisdictions, including Somerville, Tufts University, Cambridge, MIT, Lawrence, and Boston.

The warrants encompass charges ranging from breaking and entering, larceny, possession of burglary tools, receiving stolen property, assault, trespassing to making threats.

In response to the rising number of break-ins, the Somerville Police Criminal Investigation Division set up an investigative and apprehension team in collaboration with Tufts University Police, MIT Police, Boston Police, Cambridge Police, Federal agencies, and the State Police.

The police department expressed gratitude for the cooperation between law enforcement partners and the community which played a crucial role in tracking down and arresting Armelio.

Armello is scheduled for arraignment at the Somerville District Court on Monday, Jan. 6.
