MONTPELIER — A transient man was arrested by local police on New Year’s Eve after failing to appear for a scheduled arraignment earlier in the day.
At approximately 2:19 p.m., a Montpelier Police Department officer spotted Danford J.
Cross Jr., 39, behind City Hall at 39 Main Street.
Upon checking with the dispatch center, the officer discovered that Cross had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court at 12:30 p.m. that same day.
Law enforcement quickly located Cross near Shaw’s Supermarket and confirmed the warrant, which carried a $10,000 bail.
He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Washington County Superior Court Criminal Division in Barre for his original charges.
Cross is facing several charges including Attempted Sexual Assault, Lewd and Lascivious Conduct, Violations of Conditions of Release, Disorderly Conduct, and Unlawful Restraint.
Following a judicial review, he was ordered held without bail pending further hearings.
The Montpelier Police Department has not released further details on the case at this time.
