Montpelier man arrested on multiple charges including attempted sexual assault near library

MONTPELIER — A man has been taken into custody following an alleged assault near the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, the Montpelier Police Department reported on Dec. 31.

Danford Cross, a 39-year-old transient of Montpelier, faces charges of lewd & lascivious conduct, attempted sexual assault, disorderly conduct, and second-degree unlawful restraint.

Cross is also charged with violating court-ordered conditions of release that forbid violent or threatening behavior.

The incident occurred on Dec. 29, with police dispatched to the scene at around 8:25 a.m. the following day.

Officers responded to reports of an assault on a female victim.

Witnesses provided statements and identified Cross to the police at the scene.

Cross is scheduled for arraignment at the Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division, at 12:30 p.m. today.

The Montpelier Police Department has not released any further information regarding the case.
