SOMERSWORTH — New Hampshire officials released further details Wednesday about a fatal shooting in Somersworth that left one man dead and another injured.

At approximately 7:22 p.m. on Dec. 30, Somersworth police responded to a 911 call about a shooting outside an apartment building at 97 High Street.

Upon arrival, officers found Jeffrey Prouty, 36, with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.

A second man, 31, was discovered with non-gunshot wound injuries in the building’s hallway.

Both were taken to a local hospital where Prouty was pronounced dead.

The second victim has since been released.

The New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit, along with the Somersworth Police Department, is investigating the case.

Early findings suggest the shooting occurred after a verbal dispute between the two men.

Authorities are considering whether the shooter acted in self-defense.

An autopsy by Chief Medical Examiner Jennie V. Duval concluded that Prouty died from a single gunshot wound to the chest and ruled the death a homicide.

Police are now seeking the public’s help.

Witnesses present during the altercation prior to the shooting are encouraged to come forward.
