NORTH HAVEN — An attempted vehicle theft turned dramatic last night when a food delivery driver’s car, with the driver’s child inside, was nearly stolen from Universal Drive, police said.

Authorities were called to the scene around 6 p.m. after receiving reports of a car accident, which was later clarified as an attempted carjacking.

The delivery driver had left the vehicle running with an 8-year-old child inside while picking up an order from Jersey Mike’s.

Upon seeing an individual attempting to drive the car away, the driver rushed out and confronted the suspect.

The would-be thief, a young male, fled on foot, causing the car to drag the owner for a short distance.

The vehicle was eventually stopped by bystanders.

The owner suffered minor injuries during the incident.

The North Haven Police Department reported that officers apprehended a 13-year-old from Hamden shortly after.

The juvenile faces charges including Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Risk of Injury to a Minor, and Interfering.

They have been detained and transported to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center following an order to detain.
