Elderly couple killed in single-vehicle crash in Bridport

BRIDPORT — A single-vehicle crash claimed the lives of an elderly couple from River Edge, New Jersey, on Dec. 23 near Carrs Lane on VT Route 22A.

Vermont State Troopers reported to the scene at 11:27 a.m. where they found a 2015 Chevy Impala that had struck a telephone pole and overturned, coming to rest upside down.

The driver, Mark Axelrod, 78, and his passenger, Francine Axelrod, 76, were both wearing seatbelts but were pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was headed south on VT Route 22A when it veered out of its lane for reasons currently unknown.

The car subsequently collided with a telephone pole and flipped over.

Authorities have stated that neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

However, the investigation remains ongoing to determine the exact cause.

Witnesses to the accident or those with relevant information have been urged to contact the New Haven Barracks or submit an anonymous tip through the provided link.

First responders from the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, Bridport Fire Department, Middlebury Regional EMS, and Town Line First Response assisted troopers at the scene.
