FREETOWN — A man was arrested Wednesday night following a high-speed pursuit that led police through multiple jurisdictions before ending in the driver’s capture, authorities said.

At about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Patrolman Kobey Imbert of the Freetown Police Department stopped a 2019 Toyota Highlander on Chace Road near Route 140.

The driver, who initially gave a false identity, fled the scene when backup officers arrived, leading authorities on a 23-mile chase through New Bedford and back onto Route 140.

During the pursuit, which reached speeds up to 120 mph, the Lakeville Police Department deployed a tire deflation device, causing the vehicle’s tires to lose air.

The suspect continued to flee, striking two Massachusetts State Police cruisers before losing control of the vehicle and veering off the road.

The driver, identified as 45-year-old James Brownell of Millbury, MA, was taken into custody without further incident.

Brownell was arraigned in Fall River District Court on charges including possession of a Class B substance, refusal to identify himself, negligent operation, failure to stop for police, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and speeding.

Brownell also had outstanding warrants for drug, larceny, and motor vehicle offenses from Worcester and Leominster District Courts.
