Somerville police respond to attempted robbery, bomb threat in two days

SOMERVILLE — In a series of concerning events, the Somerville Police Department responded to an attempted robbery and a bomb threat within the span of two days.

On Oct. 6 at approximately 11:54 p.m., police officers were dispatched to Walnut Street following reports of an attempted robbery.

Two individuals reported they were sitting in their car at Leathers Park when two males approached them, demanding their money and car.

The suspects allegedly displayed a black object resembling a handgun.

The victims managed to escape the area unharmed.

In a separate incident the same night, two other individuals reported a similar encounter while walking home near Walnut Street and Gilman Street.

They too were confronted by two males demanding money but successfully fled to their home.

The day prior, on Oct. 5 at approximately 3:58 p.m., a bomb threat was reported at Somerville Central Park and Library.

Police swiftly evacuated the library and conducted a thorough search of the building and surrounding area.

Fortunately, no explosives were found, and the area was ultimately declared safe.

Additionally, on Oct. 6 at about 2:36 p.m., officers responded to the Central Library after receiving a report of a possible armed individual on the library’s roof.

After a comprehensive search of the roof, as well as the East and West libraries, no suspects or suspicious activity was found.

Amidst these alarming incidents, the Somerville Police Department has also been addressing a series of other crimes including seven bike thefts, three car break-ins, four motor vehicle vandalisms, one motor vehicle theft, three vandalisms, and one package theft.

The police are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately.
